About The Breed

The Belgian Malinois is an exceptional working dog known for its intelligence, confidence, and versatility, forming an unbreakable bond with its human partner. Denying a Malinois the opportunity for physical and mental activity and the pleasure of your company would rob them of their very purpose in life. These dogs are solidly built, exuding pride and attentiveness as natural herders. They typically stand between 22 to 26 inches, displaying strength and well-defined muscles. However, their elegance surpasses bulkiness, reflecting their no-nonsense attitude, as they are bred to put in earnest effort for their sustenance. Notably, a distinct characteristic of their breed is the proud way they carry their heads. Their coat colors vary, ranging from a deep fawn to a captivating mahogany shade. Accentuated by the black ears and mask, their bright inquisitive eyes resemble the color of dark Belgian chocolate. If you have had the privilege of witnessing a Malinois perform an obedience routine, you would truly appreciate the exceptional intelligence and enthusiastic nature of this breed. Problems arise however, when these dogs, which thrive on human companionship, are left unoccupied and neglected. Regular exercise, ideally engaging in activities with their beloved owners is vital for ensuring the happiness of Malinois dogs.

They conduct screenings for common health conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as certain eye problems. It is recommended to regularly examine the dog's ears for any signs of infection and maintain regular dental hygiene by brushing their teeth frequently. By being proactive in addressing these aspects of their health, owners can help keep Malinois dogs in optimal condition.

Grooming

+
The Malinois has a short and waterproof coat that is relatively low-maintenance. To keep the dog looking its best and promote new hair growth it is recommended to brush the coat occasionally using a medium-bristle brush, a rubber grooming mitt or tool or a hound glove. This brushing routine also helps distribute the natural skin oils throughout the coat. Twice a year, Malinois dogs undergo shedding, and during these periods, using a slicker brush daily can effectively remove the loose hair. Furthermore, like all breeds regular nail trimming is essential to prevent discomfort and difficulties in walking and running caused by overly long nails. By practicing these grooming habits owners can ensure their Malinois maintains a tidy and healthy coat.
Health

Exercise

+
The Malinois is a highly intelligent and athletic breed, known for its muscular build and unwavering loyalty. They require active engagement from their owners both mentally and physically. Merely leaving them in the backyard or providing daily walks is insufficient. It is crucial to prioritize regular and vigorous exercise preferably done alongside the owner to ensure the breed's happiness. Denying a Malinois the opportunity for physical activity and human companionship would be in direct opposition to their inherent needs. These dogs thrive as running, hiking and biking partners, demonstrating exceptional skills in agility, tracking, herding, obedience and Schutzhund competitions. Their versatile nature allows them to excel in various activities making them an ideal companion for individuals seeking an active and stimulating partnership.
Health

Training

+
Similar to many herding breeds, Malinois possess a strong prey drive and exhibit a keen interest in moving objects. This characteristic may cause them to chase after children, vehicles, or other animals if not properly directed. Therefore, it is imperative to channel their energy into acceptable activities through training. Early socialization and obedience training are vital for Malinois dogs. By exposing them to various environments, people, and animals from a young age, they can learn how to interact appropriately. Obedience training provides them with the necessary skills and commands to respond to their owner's instructions ultimately ensuring their behavior remains under control. Through consistent training and guidance, owners can successfully manage the Malinois' instinctual tendencies and help them become well-mannered and balanced companions.

Nutrition

+
Belgian Malinois dogs, it is recommended to provide them with high-quality dog food, whether it is commercially manufactured or prepared at home with the guidance and approval of a veterinarian. The chosen diet should be appropriate for the dog's specific age group, whether they are a puppy, adult or senior. Since some Malinois dogs have a tendency to gain weight, it is important to monitor their calorie intake and maintain a healthy weight level. While treats can be beneficial for training purposes excessive treat consumption can lead to obesity. It is essential to be aware of which human foods are safe for dogs and which should be avoided. If you have any concerns about your dog's weight or diet, it is advisable to consult with a veterinarian. Additionally, it is crucial to provide clean and fresh water to your Malinois at all times to ensure proper hydration.

Historiography

The Belgian Malinois originally bred in the region of Malines in Belgium is one of four closely related Belgian herding dog breeds. While some countries classify them together with the Tervuren, Laekenois and Belgian Shepherd (Groenendael) as a single breed called the Belgian Sheepdog, the Malinois has been recognized as a separate breed in the United States since 1959. Despite bearing a resemblance to the German Shepherd Dog the Malinois has distinct characteristics such as a different head shape being more leggy and finer boned compared to its German counterpart.

In their native land, the Malinois has long been esteemed as an exceptional herding dog. They were initially bred by dedicated dog enthusiasts who prioritized producing working dogs with outstanding character disregarding passing trends in favor of functional qualities. This focus on performance made the Malinois the preferred choice for Belgian sheepherders and cattle farmers.

The Malinois was first introduced to America in 1911, flourishing until the importation of European breeding stock was interrupted by World War II. The breed faced a decline during the postwar years but experienced resurgence in the early 1960s when efforts were made to rebuild the Malinois population in the United States.

While still valued for their herding abilities Mals are now celebrated for their versatility and high work-drive, which has opened doors to various occupations and activities. They are highly sought after as police and military K-9 dogs and have demonstrated such distinction that a life-size bronze statue of a Belgian Malinois is featured in the military dog memorial in Fayetteville North Carolina.
