Belgian Tervuren belongs to a group of four Belgian herding breeds that were originally recognized as a single breed. These breeds include Tervs Belgian Sheepdogs, Malinois, and Laekenois, and the main distinction lies in their coat type. Tervs have long, 'blackened' fawn or red hair, Belgian Sheepdogs have long black hair, Malinois have short hair, and Laekenois have wirehair.

In their country of origin, Belgium, these dogs are known as Chien de Berger Belge, but their English name comes from the village of Tervuren, which was the residence of the eminent breeder M.F. corbel. Corbel played a crucial role in developing the modern Terv breed by selectively breeding black and fawn dogs.

Centuries ago, Belgian farmers heavily relied on versatile dogs that could herd and guard. These dogs served as protectors of farms and families, while also assisting with herding and protecting livestock. Along with their physical evolution, which resulted in a medium-sized well-proportioned dog with strength and endurance they developed mentally to become adaptable helpers and attentive companions.

With the advent of mechanized farming Terv owners discovered new avenues to utilize their breed's exceptional work ethic and versatility, which were ingrained through generations on Belgian pastures and in barnyards.
