It's important to note that breeds with high shedding are more likely to trigger allergies in individuals who are sensitive to pet dander. However, it's important to note that individual dogs within a breed can vary in their drooling tendencies, so it's always a good idea to spend time with specific dogs or talk to breeders and owners to get an idea of the drooling potential before making a decision.

About The Breed

The Boykin Spaniel is a medium-sized dog known for its lush brown coat. They are characterized as avid, eager, merry, and trainable. While they excel as both a mellow housedog and a tenacious bird dog, the breed was once a well-kept secret of South Carolina. Boykins are slightly larger and more rangy than Cockers, yet more compact compared to Springers. Their distinct feature is their beautiful solid-brown coat ranging from rich liver to luscious chocolate. Their expressive eyes are highlighted by the large, feathery ears that hang close to their cheeks, giving them a soulful look of intelligence.

Originally bred to work in the lakes and swamps of South Carolina, Boykins possess webbed toes, allowing them to swim proficiently. Although they were initially known solely to hunters of Carolina waterfowl and wild turkey, their delightful nature as family companions has gained appreciation outside of their hunting origins. They are described as very sweet dogs to have around the family, while remaining fierce and determined in the field.

Boykin Spaniels are typically healthy dogs, and reputable breeders take measures to screen their breeding stock for common health conditions such as hip dysplasia, juvenile cataracts, and exercise-induced collapse. It is important for owners to regularly check their Boykin's ears for signs of infection and clean them as needed. Soft gauze and an ear-cleaning solution recommended by the breeder or veterinarian can be used for this purpose. Additionally, maintaining dental hygiene is crucial, and regular brushing of the dog's teeth using toothpaste formulated for dogs is recommended. These practices contribute to the overall well-being and health of Boykin Spaniels.

Grooming

The Boykin Spaniel's medium-length, wavy coat is relatively low-maintenance. Regular brushing on a weekly basis helps to eliminate dirt and loose hair, keeping their coat in good condition and appearance. Occasional baths are also beneficial to maintain a clean and fresh scent. Like all breeds, it is important to regularly trim their nails to prevent discomfort and difficulties in walking or running that can arise from overly long nails. By adhering to these grooming practices, Boykin Spaniels can stay comfortable and keep their coat and overall appearance in optimal condition.

Exercise

+
Boykin Spaniels are known to have moderate to high energy levels and require a significant amount of exercise every day. They thrive with active individuals or families who are seeking an athletic companion for various activities such as hiking, running, or biking. Regular exercise is essential to keep the Boykin healthy and happy. Long walks and play sessions are great ways to meet their exercise needs. In addition to physical activity, engaging their mind is important as well. Boykins can exercise both their body and mind by participating in obedience training, tracking, agility, rally, field events, and other activities that provide mental stimulation and strengthen the bond between the dog and its owner. Participating in these activities not only helps to meet their exercise requirements but also allows the Boykin Spaniels to showcase their natural abilities and skills. It is important to provide them with ample opportunities for both physical and mental exercise to ensure their overall well-being and contentment.

One of the breed's notable traits is its affectionate and fiercely loyal personality making Boykins an excellent choice for a family pet. They particularly enjoy the company of children and other dogs, thriving on companionship. Nutrition

+
The Boykin Spaniel will thrive when provided with high-quality dog food, whether it is commercially manufactured or prepared at home with the guidance and approval of your veterinarian. It is essential to ensure that the chosen diet is suitable for the dog's specific age group (puppy, adult, or senior). Some dogs are prone to gaining excess weight, hence it is important to monitor their calorie intake and weight. While treats can assist in training, it's crucial to avoid excessive indulgence, as it may lead to obesity. Familiarize yourself with the human foods that are safe for dogs, while being aware of those that should be avoided. If you have any concerns or questions regarding your dog's weight or diet, do not hesitate to consult your vet. Lastly, ensure that clean and fresh water is always accessible to your beloved canine companion.

Historiography

Among the AKC breeds developed in the 20th century, the Boykin Spaniel originated in the small South Carolina community of Boykin. The breed's story began when Alexander White discovered a young brown spaniel, which he named Dumpy outside a church in Spartanburg, South Carolina around 1900. White recognized Dumpy's natural talents for water retrieves and hunting, prompting him to send the spaniel for training to Whit Boykin, a leading figure in the community known for his expertise in dogs.

Whit Boykin was captivated by Dumpy's abilities, which extended beyond duck hunting to include flushing and retrieving wild turkeys. Building upon Dumpy's potential, Boykin established a breeding program that involved crosses with breeds like the Chesapeake Bay retriever, Cocker Spaniel, English springer spaniel, and American Water Spaniel. This careful selection resulted in the creation of the energetic and versatile Boykin Spaniel we know today.

Initially, the Boykin's popularity was limited to its birthplace, but over time, bird hunters from around the country, particularly along the East Coast, recognized the breed's exceptional qualities. The Boykin Spaniel's success can be attributed to its boundless energy in the field, its prowess on land and in water and its gentle and affectionate demeanor at home. In honor of the breed's significance, South Carolina declared the Boykin Spaniel as its official state dog, and September 1 is celebrated as Boykin Spaniel Day. The Boykin Spaniel achieved full recognition by the AKC in 2009, solidifying its status among the prestigious group of AKC-recognized "all-American" dog breeds.
