CARING WITH FAMILY
Independent
Lovey-Dovey
The level of affection a breed exhibits towards family members or familiar individuals can vary. Certain breeds tend to be more reserved and may display aloofness towards everyone except their owner. On the other hand, there are breeds that show equal warmth and friendliness to all individuals they are familiar with, treating them as if they were their closest companions. It's important to remember that each dog is unique and may have their own personality traits regardless of breed. Socialization, upbringing and individual experiences also play a significant role in shaping a dog's affectionate behavior towards family members and other people.
LOVE WITH CHILDREN
Unwise
Good With Children
A breed's level of tolerance and patience with children's behavior, as well as their overall family-friendly nature, can vary. It is important to note that dogs should always be supervised when interacting with young children or children of any age who have limited exposure to dogs
BEHAVIOR WITH DOGS
Unwise
Good With Other Dogs
The general friendliness of a breed towards other dogs can vary. It is important to always supervise interactions and introductions between dogs, regardless of the breed. However, certain breeds tend to have a more innate tendency to get along with other dogs, both in home settings and in public environments.
SHEDDING LEVELS & MANAGEMENT
No Shedding
Hair Everywhere
How much fur and hair you can expect the breed to leave behind. Breeds with high shedding will need to be brushed more frequently, are more likely to trigger certain types of allergies and are more likely to require more consistent vacuuming and lint-rolling.
COAT GROOMING STANDARDS
Monthly
Daily
The grooming needs of a breed, such as bathing, brushing, trimming, or other coat maintenance activities, should be taken into consideration in terms of frequency. Furthermore, it is important to assess the amount of time, patience and budget you can allocate for these grooming responsibilities.
DROOLING INTENSITY
Less Likely to Drool
Always Have a Towel
Considering the likelihood of excessive drooling in different dog breeds, it's important to note that some breeds are more prone to drooling than others. If you happen to be someone who prefers cleanliness and tidiness, you might want to avoid breeds that have a tendency to leave trails of drool on your arm or create noticeable wet spots on your clothing. Opting for a breed with less drooling tendencies might be a more suitable choice for you if maintaining a pristine appearance is a priority.

FRIENDLINESS

Everyone Is My Best Friend
The level of friendliness and openness towards strangers can vary among different dog breeds. Some breeds tend to be more reserved or cautious around unfamiliar individuals regardless of the situation or environment. On the other hand, there are breeds that exhibit a welcoming and joyful attitude towards new people whenever they encounter them. It's important to consider this aspect if you desire a breed that is generally comfortable and amicable with strangers.
LIVELINESS
Only When You Want To Play
Non-Stop
The enthusiasm for play can vary among different dog breeds, even beyond their puppyhood years. Some breeds tend to maintain their playful nature and continue to enjoy games such as tug-of-war or fetch well into their adult years. These breeds have a high energy level and a strong desire for interactive play sessions. On the other hand, there are breeds that are generally more inclined to relax and enjoy calm activities, such as lounging on the couch with their owners. They are content with less vigorous forms of play and prefer a more laid-back lifestyle. Understanding a breed's tendency for playfulness can help you align their activity level with your own preferences and lifestyle.
VIGILANCE INTENSITY
What's Mine Is Yours
Vigilant
Certain breeds possess a natural inclination to alert their owners to the presence of strangers. They are more likely to react to any potential threat, whether it's the mailman approaching the house or a squirrel outside the window. These breeds are known for their heightened sense of vigilance and may display behaviors such as barking or monitoring their surroundings closely. However, it's worth noting that these breeds can also warm up to strangers who enter the house particularly if they are introduced and accepted by the family. Their initial alertness serves as a protective instinct, but it does not necessarily mean they will remain unfriendly towards newcomers
ADAPTATION CAPACITY
Lives For Routine
Highly Adaptable
The adaptability of a dog breed to changes in living conditions, noise, weather, daily schedule, and other variations in day-to-day life can differ. Some breeds are naturally more flexible and can handle changes with relative ease. They are adaptable to different environments and can adjust well to varying routines or living situations. These breeds tend to be more resilient and can handle disruptions with minimal stress or difficulty.

STAMINA LEVEL

High Energy
The exercise and mental stimulation needs of dog breeds can indeed vary. High-energy breeds typically require more physical activity to remain content and healthy. They have a surplus of energy and enthusiasm, often engaging in activities such as running, playing fetch or participating in high-intensity exercises. About The Breed

The Chinese Crested is a distinct and unique breed, easily recognizable by its spotted pink skin, spiky 'crested' hairdo, furry socks, and feathery tail. This toy breed is known for its playful and affectionate nature making it a delightful companion dog. Standing between 11 and 13 inches tall, the Chinese Crested can come in two varieties: hairless or coated.

The hairless variety has smooth and soft skin, with tufts of hair on the head, tail, and ankles. This breed is often free from doggy odor, and shedding is minimal or nonexistent due to their lack of hair. On the other hand, the coated variety, known as the 'powderpuff,' has a soft and silky coat that covers their body. Other than the coat, the powderpuff and hairless varieties share similar characteristics. Both exhibit an elegant and graceful movement, with a fine-boned structure.

Chinese Crested are known for their playful and loving nature. They form a deep bond with their human companions and make attentive housemates. Whether hairless or coated these dogs are highly attuned to their family and are always ready to shower them with affection.

Health

Responsible breeders prioritize the health of their breeding stock and take measures to address potential inherited health issues in the Chinese Crested breed. They conduct regular screenings to identify and prevent the occurrence of eye problems such as progressive retinal atrophy, glaucoma and primary lens luxation. Although epilepsy may occasionally affect the breed, breeders aim to minimize its occurrence through careful selection and breeding practices.

Patellar luxation, commonly known as slipped stifles, is a condition that can impact Chinese Crested, as it does several small breeds. Responsible breeders take this into consideration and may undertake relevant measures to reduce its prevalence.

Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, which affects the hip joint, does not have a specific DNA test for screening parents. However, responsible breeders may utilize X-rays to monitor this condition as it can occasionally be detected through these imaging tests.

Health Assessment Recommendations from the Breed's National Association:

  • Patella Evaluation

  • Primary Lens Luxation (PLL) - DNA Test

  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Rod-Cone Dysplasia 3 (PRA-rcd3) - DNA Test

  • Cardiac Exam

  • Ophthalmologist Evaluation

Grooming

+
The Chihuahua is available in two different coat types, each requiring its own grooming regimen. For your smooth-coat Chihuahua, occasional brushing and regular baths will keep them looking handsome. On the other hand, the longhaired Chihuahua should be brushed at least once a week to prevent tangles or mats. Don't forget to trim the nails of both coat varieties on a regular basis. Paying attention to your Chihuahua's dental health is crucial too. It's important to brush their teeth and consider using tooth-care treats recommended by your veterinarian. Moreover, remember to check your Chihuahua's ears frequently and keep them clean to avoid any potential ear infections. Repeat this process 10 times
Health

Exercise

+
To meet the exercise requirements of a Chinese Crested dog, a daily routine of brief walks with their owner and playtime in their own backyard tends to suffice. Engaging in outdoor activities benefits the energetic Crested, although it's important to safeguard them by applying sunscreen or dressing them in protective clothing. These pint-sized pups are impressively resilient and can exhibit a strong competitive spirit in canine sports.
Health

Training

+
Due to their strong bond with their owners, the Chinese Crested is an excellent choice for individuals interested in participating in competitive sports such as agility, flyball, and obedience. They also excel as therapy dogs and have shown great talent in lure coursing. However, it's important to note that these dogs possess a highly sensitive nature and therefore require gentle, patient training methods. Using harsh words or negative actions can have detrimental effects on your relationship with them, potentially hindering their willingness to learn from you in the future.
Health

Nutrition

+
Providing a high-quality dog food that matches the Chinese Crested's age (puppy, adult, or senior) and is specifically designed for small or toy breeds is crucial in ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients. It's important to be mindful of their calorie intake and weight as some Chinese Crested dogs are prone to becoming overweight. While treats can be valuable for training purposes, it is essential to avoid overindulgence as excessive treat consumption can lead to obesity. Table scraps should be given sparingly, if at all, especially avoiding cooked bones and fatty foods. Educate yourself on which human foods are safe for dogs and which should be avoided. If you have any concerns regarding your dog's weight or diet consult with your veterinarian for guidance.

Historiography

The origins of the Chinese Crested breed are ancient, and its creation can only be speculated upon based on educated assumptions. It is believed that large hairless dogs from Africa were brought to China in ancient times, and through generations of selective breeding their size was reduced. The Chinese, known for their expertise in miniaturization, played a role in creating breeds like the Shi Tzu and Pekingese through similar methods.

Chinese Crested dogs were often found aboard Chinese trading vessels, where they became renowned as skilled rat catchers, helping control disease-carrying rodents. These dogs were traded among sailors in various seaports worldwide, earning them the name "Chinese Ship Dog." As they traveled, different variations of the breed emerged in places like Egypt, Turkey, and South Africa where they were selectively bred.

The widespread travels of Crested led to their presence in ports and towns across Central and South America, Asia, and Africa. During the Age of Discovery European explorers documented sightings of Crested-like dogs in these regions, further spreading the breed's influence.

In the United States, the Chinese Crested gained recognition thanks to the efforts of individuals such as journalist Ida Garrett and breeder Debra Woods. Starting in the 1880s, Garrett promoted the breed through her extensive writing and speaking engagements while Woods contributed to its development through her meticulous breeding program and maintenance of studbooks. The American Chinese Crested Club was established in 1979, and the breed was officially recognized by the AKC Stud Book in 1991.
