About The Breed

The Cirneco dell'Etna a sleek and muscular breed, is an ancient coursing hound originating from Sicily. Known for its athleticism, this dog possesses remarkable speed and agility. As household companions, Cirnechi are gentle and loyal, requiring minimal maintenance.

With a height of under 20 inches, the Cirneco is often likened to a smaller version of the Pharaoh hound which hails from Malta. These slender yet sturdy hunters boast a coat that ranges in color from light to dark tan or chestnut. Their distinctively upright ears complement the alert expression of their eyes which are typically amber or ochre in color.

These Sicilian dogs epitomize the traits commonly associated with sighthounds: affectionate, independent, and astonishingly swift. However, it is believed that Cirnechi possess a touch more trainability compared to other sighthound breeds. These living relics from ancient times have aptly transitioned into the 21st century, remaining true to their original form despite passing trends and preferences.

Grooming

+
The Cirneco dell'Etna boasts a short-haired and smooth coat that demands minimal upkeep. Regular, gentle brushing with a soft bristle brush or hound glove on a weekly basis will help keep the dog's appearance at its finest. Occasional baths are only necessary as needed. It is important to inspect the Cirneco's ears regularly for dirt or excessive wax buildup. If cleaning is necessary, a soft gauze and vet-recommended ear-cleaning solution should be used. Additionally, the dog's breeder or veterinarian can suggest a suitable brand. Trimming the nails is crucial and should be done regularly if they are not naturally worn down. Overly long nails can cause discomfort for the dog, so it is essential to keep them properly maintained.
Health

Exercise

+
Satisfying the Cirneco's highly intelligent and curious nature requires moderate physical exercise and mental stimulation. This breed thrives when assigned a purpose, whether it involves participating in canine competitions or fulfilling interactive family roles. They particularly enjoy engaging in long walks and various activities with their human companions. It's important to note that their strong hunting instincts warrant caution when it comes to off-leash activities in unsecured areas. Their inclination to chase after perceived prey may lead them astray. Thus, it's recommended to keep them on a leash or in securely enclosed spaces. A fenced backyard provides an excellent environment for the Cirneco to enjoy playtime with their owner. However, they should not be left alone outside without attention for extended periods as it can result in feelings of loneliness and unhappiness. Regular social interaction and companionship are essential to their overall well-being.
Health

Training

+
The Cirneco dell'Etna possesses a strong and independent temperament that is essential for their hunting instincts. However, they are also known to be friendly, affectionate, and make excellent family pets. They respond well to gentle training methods and can be effectively trained in various disciplines such as obedience, rally, agility, tracking, and, of course, hunting, which is their historical purpose. Many Cirnechi particularly enjoy lure coursing. When introducing the Cirneco to cats and small animals, caution must be exercised due to their strong prey drive. It is recommended to prioritize early socialization and enroll them in puppy training classes. These measures help ensure that the Cirneco develops into a well-adjusted and well-behaved companion.
Health

Nutrition

+
To ensure the Cirneco dell'Etna's optimal health, it is important to provide them with a high-quality dog food that is suitable for their specific age (puppy, adult, or senior) and activity level. Familiarize yourself with the list of human foods that are safe for dogs and those that should be avoided. If you have any uncertainties or concerns regarding your dog's weight or diet, it is advisable to consult with your veterinarian or reach out to the dog's breeder for guidance. Lastly, remember to always provide clean and fresh water for your Cirneco as hydration is essential for their well-being.

Historiography

The origins of the Cirneco dell'Etna can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where 'sighthounds' or 'coursing hounds' were perfected, based on the Greyhound model. These fast and explosive hunters were then traded and developed throughout the Middle East and Mediterranean region. The name Cirneco itself hints at its origin, as it is derived from a Greek word meaning 'dog of Cyrene (Libya).' It is believed that the breed has existed in Sicily for approximately 3,000 years, brought by Phoenician traders who voyaged to the island. Historical evidence shows that dogs resembling Cirnechi were depicted on Sicilian coins as early as 500 B.C.

Cirnechi, also known as Sicilian Greyhounds, have been chasing rabbit, hare, and game birds across the rocky slopes of Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe. Despite their delicate appearance these dogs are resilient and adapted to the harsh conditions of their homeland. They can endure long hours of hunting without food or water in the hot climate and rugged terrain of Sicily. By the early 1930s, the Cirneco breed was facing extinction. A veterinarian named Dr. Maurizio Migneco wrote a passionate article about the breed's imminent demise, which caught the attention of Baroness Agata Paterne Castello a Sicilian aristocrat. The Baroness dedicated 26 years to reviving the breed in Sicily. In 1939, the Cirneco dell'Etna received recognition from Italy's national kennel club and in 2015, the American Kennel Club (AKC) also recognized the breed.
