Providing appropriate mental stimulation is crucial to ensure the well-being of such breeds.

About The Breed

The Croatian Sheepdog is described as an agile, helpful, and humble shepherd dog. It demonstrates self-reliance and bravery and it is known for being trustworthy. The dog is considered the true master of its flock and exhibits the ability to quickly intervene by running through the back of the herd to reach the necessary point of action.

Historical records from the bishop of Djakovo in 1374 referred to this breed as Canis Pastoralis Croaticus, the Croatian Shepherd Dog. The bishop wrote about the dog's presence as the Croatian people migrated to their new land. In 1719, Bishop Peter Bakic quoted the earlier manuscript and described the Croatian Sheepdog, stating that its appearance had remained unchanged over the centuries.

A systematic selective breeding program for the Croatian Sheepdog was initiated by veterinarian Prof Dr. Stjepan Romic in 1935 within the Djakovo territory. After 34 years of dedicated work, the breed gained recognition from the FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale) in 1969.
