Historiography

The Dogo Argentino breed traces its origins back to the province of Cordoba, located in the central region of the Republic of Argentina. Dr. Antonio Nores Martinez, a respected doctor from a traditional family, played a pivotal role in creating this breed. Driven by his lifelong passion for dogs and inspired by his family's legacy he embarked on a dedicated mission in 1928 to establish a new dog breed, which he named the Dogo Argentino.

Dr. Nores Martinez meticulously crossbred various purebred dogs with the robust and vigorous old fighting dog from Cordoba. Through a meticulous process of character study and selection over multiple generations, he successfully achieved his goal and produced the first Dogo Argentino bloodline. Initially renowned as a fighting dog, Dr. Nores Martinez's personal fondness for hunting prompted him to bring the breed along on his hunting expeditions. Here, the Dogo Argentino's remarkable abilities were showcased rapidly establishing its reputation as an exceptional big-game hunting companion. Over time, this breed's versatility became evident as it excelled not only in hunting but also in fulfilling roles as a loyal and protective companion.

Blessed with strength, tenacity, a keen sense of smell and significant courage, the Dogo Argentino proved itself as an outstanding hunting dog for various formidable prey, including wild boars, peccaries, pumas and other predators throughout the diverse landscapes of Argentina. Its harmonious physique, well-balanced structure, and excellent athletic muscles make it an ideal choice for enduring long journeys across challenging terrains and engaging fiercely with its targeted prey.

In 1973, thanks to Dr. Augustin Nores Martinez, the brother and successor of Dr. Antonio Nores Martinez, the breed achieved international recognition and was officially accepted by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) as the first and only Argentinean breed. Driven by immense passion unwavering dedication, and tireless effort the Dogo Argentino gained the acclaim it rightfully deserved.
