A high-grade dog diet either store bought or homemade under veterinary guidance is prime for your Jagdterrier's well-being. Tailor the food to their phase of life pup, prime or pensioner. While treats do wonders for training, they should be given sparingly to sidestep the slippery slope to obesity. Be sure you're up to speed on human treats that are dog-approved. Whenever you're in doubt about dietary choices or your pal's poundage, your vet's advice is priceless. And let's not forget, ample fresh water is their right all day and night.

Historiography

Following the cessation of hostilities in World War I, a small fraction of avid hunters made the decision to part ways with the considerably larger Fox-Terrier Club. This splinter group was driven by a singular vision: to cultivate a breed tailored exclusively for its prowess in the hunt. Distinguished hunters and dog breeding experts, Rudolf Frieb, Walter Zangenberg and Carl-Erich Grunewald set out to identify and develop a black and tan canine that showed a particular aptitude for subterranean pursuits. Fortuitously, their ambitions were bolstered when Lutz Heck, a zoo director entrusted Walter Zangenberg with four black and tan terriers, which were reputed to be of pure Fox-Terrier descent. These terriers laid the groundwork for what would become the renowned Jagdterrier breed.

During this era, Dr. Herbert Lackner became affiliated with the initiative. After extensive and thoughtful breeding practices and by incorporating strategic interbreeding with the Old English Wirehaired Terrier and the Welsh terrier, they achieved a stable look for the new breed. Concurrently, they honed in on developing a versatile dog—easy to train, resilient, enthusiastic and water-friendly, with a robust hunting drive. In 1926, the German Hunting Terrier Club (Deutscher Jagdterrier-Club e.V.) became an official entity. Unwaveringly, the breeders prioritized their canine's utility in hunting, its consistent temperament, dauntless spirit and vitality.
