Grooming

+
The Slovensky Kopov sports a short snug coat that needs just sporadic grooming. Thanks to his thick undercoat, he experiences seasonal shedding and during these periods, he'll benefit from more frequent brush-downs. An infrequent bath will maintain his cleanliness and ensure he always looks dapper. Keep an eye on his robust nails, which grow quickly, they'll require timely trimming using clippers or a grinder to prevent any overgrowth, splitting or cracking. Regular checks of his ears are also prudent to circumvent any accumulation of wax and debris that could lead to infection. And don't overlook dental hygiene; brush his teeth as necessary to keep that smile shining.
Health

Exercise

+
Exercise options for your companion can range from playful bouts in a securely enclosed backyard to several leashed strolls throughout the day. Indoors, games like hide-and-seek, rolling a ball for them to chase or teaching them new tricks can keep them active and engaged. For a dose of adventure, partake in outdoor pursuits like swimming, trail hiking or playing fetch with balls or frisbees, all excellent for channeling their energy. If you're in an apartment setting, brief hallway walks can suffice for physical activity, particularly when the weather is less cooperative. Additionally, training in dog sports such as agility, obedience or rally offers a dynamic avenue for physical and mental exercise.

Nutrition

+
The Slovensky Kopov thrives on a high-quality canine diet, which can either be of a reputable commercial brand or a home-prepared regimen overseen and endorsed by your vet. It's essential that the food is suitable for the dog’s life stage be it puppy, adult or senior. Be mindful of their tendency to gain excess weight and monitor their caloric intake as well as their weight status. While treats can be beneficial for training purposes, they should be dispensed judiciously to avoid the risk of obesity. Familiarize yourself with human foods that are safe for canine consumption and those that aren't. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your dog's nutrition or weight, don't hesitate to consult with your veterinarian. Additionally, ensure that your Slovensky Kopov has access to clean, fresh water at all times.

Historiography

Tracing its origins to ancient times as a renowned hunting companion, the breed we recognize today was first formally acknowledged in the 1870s. Historical documents from the 17th and 18th centuries indicate a prohibition against crossbreeding the Slovensky Kopov, a sign that the breed had achieved a notable status among hunters of that era. The breed gets its name 'Kopov' from the Hungarian term 'kopo', which translates to scent hound. The development of the Slovensky Kopov's lineage is thought to have included the Brandlbracke (Austrian Black and Tan Hound), Chart Polski and Magyar Agar (Hungarian Greyhound). In 1915, a concerted effort to refine the breeding of Kopovs was set in motion by regulations that eliminated larger hound breeds from deer hunting, which also coincided with the unification of the Kopovs' color patterns.

The modern phase of selective breeding for the Kopov commenced in 1936. A select ensemble of dogs was meticulously chosen for a breeding initiative aimed at eliminating any undesired variability in color and size. Through successive generations, breeders were able to stabilize the population and standardize the genetic makeup. In recognition of its status as a proficient scenthound, the FCI officially acknowledged the Slovensky Kopov in 1963. The establishment of the Slovak Hound Breeders Club in Bratislava, Slovakia came in 1988. Though it has been quite prevalent in its native region for a long time, it is only recently that the Slovensky Kopov has started to catch the attention of dog enthusiasts around the globe.
